Day 43: A Snow Shot of America Live Blog Edition

Updated @ 3:30 PM CST 12 February 2011… I wanted to add clarification to this post that I did receive photographs from all 50 states. Please see the following post on how I learned about receiving the Hawaii photographs: Day 44: …And Hawaii By An Inch!

Updated @ 1:15 AM CST 13 February 2010… I have uploaded photos from all 50 states (plus Washington D.C.) into a slideshow on this blog. The Hawaiian photo was not from today, unfortunately. However, I included it for completeness – not to mention it is spectacular. You can view this preliminary slideshow by clicking on the “Snow Shot of America” Heading (far right under the title) or by going to the following URL:

http://www.patricktmarsh.com/snow-shot-of-america/

If you hover over the photographs, you will get the State, Location and the name of the person who submitted the photo in parentheses. If you click on the “View with PicLens” option, a nice slideshow will begin with the information located in the top center of the slideshow. The photos are arranged in alphabetical order based on the state abbreviation, however some states have more than one photograph.

I have well over 700 emails to still sift through, and there is no telling how many more there will be by tomorrow. I promise I will work as quickly as I can to create the Google Earth views of the images, but it will take some time. Even if I could go through 60 emails an hour (1 a minute) it would still take me well over 11 hours to go through all of these. As it is now, I’m getting through about 15-20 emails an hour (yes, I’m taking time to respond to everyone of them), which means it will take much longer to go through them all. Then, I still have to put them into Google Earth. I will continue to provide updates on the progress over the coming days and weeks.

Thanks again to everyone for helping out. I hope everyone enjoys looking at the photos as much as I do. There are some really amazing photographs contained in the slideshow…and I’m sure even more amazing photographs waiting to be discovered in the emails!

Updated @ 6:30 PM CST…now have 49/50 plus Washington D.C. as we grabbed a webcam shot from Wyoming. Looks like all that is left is Hawaii, and that’s going to be really tough. Not sure if anyone will look for, let alone find, a sheltered valley that might have a snow patch left from the earlier blizzards (of which I have photos courtesy of the National Weather Service Pacific Region Headquarters). However, I won’t give up complete hope, but realistically speaking, this may be as good as it gets…  Below is the National Snow Analysis for the contiguous United States valid 12 Febuary 2010.

Day 43

Updated @ 5:45 PM CST…now have 48/50 plus Washington D.C.  (however two states NH, WA) are taken via webcam).  Also, if you have tried to contact me via Facebook, Twitter, Email, etc, I apologize if I don’t get back to you right away.  I’m a bit swamped at the moment.  However, my end goal is to email everyone back and let them know when the project is complete.  Thank you so much for the help!!!

wrote about your endeavor, too: http://www.jhunderground.com/2010/02/12/snowpocalypse-may-hit-all-50-states/

Thanks! Looks like HI will be our problem (El Nino year), but there is the faintest of hope…

I just moved from WA state! I just missed the snow there, I wish I could have gotten a picture for you.
I have pictures of snow in Seattle WA last year… haha but that doesnt help you for this year. I will see if I can get a picture from a friend there :-)

  • http://www.patricktmarsh.com pmarsh

    Thank you very much!!!

And I have friends who’s parents are from NH and still have family there… I am asking them for a picture of New Hampshire. I think they might actually be there right now too!

And I put up a link to your endeavors on my blog :-)
Great idea, I want to keep all this documented for my son. He is a year old and loving the snow being PILED way above his head (we are in PA).

You are going to have trouble getting a shot from Hawai’i. I work on the summit of Mauna Kea, we have no snow to photograph. We did get some small accumulations back in November. It took a while for the small drift behind buildings and on north slopes to melt, but they are long gone now.

    Take a look for yourself…

Thank you for the interest. I’m aware HI will give us trouble and that Mauna Kea is not living up to it’s native name. However, when I started this project I was going of what turned out to be faulty information. When I learned of the blizzard late in December, I held out hope that there might be some snow in the shadows or a sheltered valley somewhere off the peak.

Sorry to break the news. I will next be on the summit Tuesday and can look around in the corners, but I have not seen anything since the last icy patches behind the building melted a month ago. I have also sent your link to a couple folks who are working the summit tonight. But I suspect the answer will be the same. Current forecast is for clear and cold for the remainder of the week.

Thanks for trying! I have received some amazing photos of snow from up there from past storms – what a sight!

Passed the word and have several people looking for snow, possibly tomorrow?

For past Mauna Kea snow shots just go to my blog and type “snow” into the search box on the right. I was a little surprised at how many snow articles and photos I have posted from working on The Mountain.

Hi, I’m an engineering student at Carnegie Mellon with some experience with map-mashups and the like. I could set something up on Google App Engine so it would be easier for you and contributors to add photos to the snow shot map.

    Possibilities:
    * Reads in Twitter messages with a certain #tag and maps them. For example “person writes message and picture url (Atlanta, GA) #snowshot”
    * Set up an e-mail address, people can send an e-mail with subject as the location, photo is attached, and it maps them.
    * Set up a private e-mail address, and to map a picture just forward the e-mails you receive to it with location in the subject. (this would make the e-mails you’ve already gotten easy, too)

What a great project Patrick! Snow isn’t news for us in Chicago, but I’m glad someone is documenting the rest of the country. I wrote a little blurb to share your Snow Shots of America on my science for non-scientists blog. Good luck with the Hawaii shot!

I’m glad you like it and thanks for sharing! I hope your readers like it as well!

    Hi Nick,

I removed your email from the post, but will put it back if you desire. I will be in contact with you later this afternoon. Thanks for the suggestions!

Andrew et al. – Re Hawaii – I emailed Patrick photos of a couple of remaining small patches of now to the north of the unpaved road connecting the Subaru and Keck telescopes. They were taken last evening. He has them and is “verifying” them and I believe will publish one soon.

  • http://www.gemini.edu Tom Geballe

Apologies for the typo. now = snow

  • http://www.darkerview.com Andrew Cooper

Update from Mauna Kea… Snow Located! A few patches of remnant snow near a retention basin between the Subaru and Keck Telescopes. Photos are on a cell phone and have yet to be forwarded. Worst case will take photos Tuesday if the snow is still there.
