Well....whos thinking of ice in hawaii. There is never snow there.
You can just go out at the beaches in the sun light where snorkeling and scuba diving are the activities you can perform.

[Here via http://wattsupwiththat.com/tips-and-notes-to-wuwt/ ]

Congratulations! If I may add my own observation (this would be a great
science fair project) vis-a-vis snow melt:

One of the forecasters mentioned that temperatures a couple days in January
exceeded 50 degrees, and there have been plenty more days above freezing
since the last snow. ... The extremely dry air most of the time may have
 hindered melting.

I live in New Hampshire and track snowfall and snow depths from several informal spotters at http://wermenh.com/sdd/index.html .

A common reference here is to "snow eating fog," but I think that has cause and effect reversed. When the dew point is above freezing, water condenses on snow, and the release of latent heat melts the snow and that keeps the released heat from warming the air. So the snow still cools the air, causing fog to form.

We commonly see warm (50ish) moist outbreaks in March and can see the fog slipping downslope over a snow field. Not snow field like Denali or even Mauna Kea, but snow field like someone's front yard or hilltop church.

I don't have good numbers to share, but whenever we have a forecast for warm weather I look at the dew point to estimate how much melting may occur.

50 degrees on a north slope with sub freezing dew points? Even our dense atmosphere here at 350 ASL can't melt much.

Congratulations again - I'm looking forward to the snowshot pages and will be happy to link to them from my climate page. (Yes, I understand weather is not climate, but it is raw data for climate....)

[...] Update at 6:45 a.m. ET, Feb. 14: We got a very early morning e-mail from Patrick Marsh saying that: Overnight last night I received an email from an astronomer working on Mauna Kea, HI. The photographs, containing snow, were examined by the NWS (National Weather Service) in Honolulu and they found no reason to doubt the legitimacy of the photographs. You can read more about the last photo on my blog. [...]

Oh, and Patrick, here are some more pictures of the snow outside Subaru, taken in the afternoon when the lighting angle is better:

I'm a telescope operator at Subaru Telescope, and I was up there Saturday afternoon the 13th and can confirm the snow patches were still there. They're getting smaller and will probably melt within a week unless a fresh storm comes, but yes, Hawaii still has snow.

(And now I know who else's footprints I saw - scooped by Jesse!)
