Day 189: And the Rains Came
Atlantic Basin Tropical Depression #2 of the 2010 Hurricane Season came ashore today without much fanfare. The tropical wave could not organize enough to strengthen. However, although the winds were minimal, the tropical moisture and rain was just as potent as a category 5 hurricane. This moisture has moved into the southern plains, and as advertised, is interacting with a slow moving front to produce copious amounts of rain. In fact, the all-time 24-hour rainfall record for Amarillo, TX was broken today. They received nearly 1/3 of their yearly rainfall in less than 24-hours, which amounted to just less than 7″ (however, some areas in the Amarillo vicinity received almost a foot!). Just think about the flooding that must have occurred in the Texas Panhandle.
This pattern doesn’t change tomorrow, so expect continued heavy rain and flooding across much of the south central United States.
